Primarily, the day was celebrated in the memory of Union soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the Civil War. But, after 1st world war, this trend expanded to the dead militants of any war or military operation. The establishment of a public holiday was meant to unify the celebration as a national day of remembrance instead of a holiday celebrated separately by the Union and Confederate states. In 1868, there was an idea for a specific holiday. It was given by Illinois Senator John Alexander Logan, a former Union general and keynote speaker. By positioning himself as a commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, he issued the proclamation to celebrate “Decoration Day” on May 30. In 1971, Memorial Day became a federal holiday.
